Four courses, four stops

What you eat, and where

The walk starts on the Quai Saint-Pierre, the restaurant row along the Old Port under the hill of the old quarter, where the first hour is spent. From there you walk to the Marché Forville for half an hour: Cannes' covered market, where the guide explains what grows and what is caught along this coast.

The second half moves to the town everyone pictures. You spend an hour on the Croisette, the palm-lined seafront by the festival hall, and a final hour on Rue d'Antibes, the shopping street one block inland, where the walk ends. The courses are spread across at least four stops, so you never sit long, and pissaladière, local wine and a dessert are all part of the meal.

Why eat Cannes on foot rather than at one table

Choosing one restaurant in Cannes means choosing one kind of food. A progressive lunch solves that: four courses in four places that locals use, with someone to tell you what you are eating and where to come back to. Water and wine are in the fare, so the only extra is anything you order beyond the menu.

The three and a half hours, stop by stop

1. Meet the guide. In front of the Pizzeria Cresci, 3 Quai Saint-Pierre, by the Old Port.
2. The Old Port quay. About an hour on the Quai Saint-Pierre, with the first course.
3. The covered market. About 30 minutes among the stalls of the Marché Forville.
4. The seafront. About an hour on the Croisette, by the festival hall.
5. The shopping street. About an hour on Rue d'Antibes, where the walk and the meal end.

By the Old Port, ending one street back from the sea

You meet your guide in front of the Pizzeria Cresci at 3 Quai Saint-Pierre, on the quay of the Old Port below the old quarter.

The walk does not return to the start. It ends on Rue d'Antibes, a street back from the seafront, and the exact end point can shift a little with the restaurants on the day. The meeting-point map shows the quay beside the other Cannes starts, and the visitor guide has the train from Nice.

Know before you go

• Come hungry. The four courses add up to a full lunch; skip breakfast's second croissant.
• Tell the operator about diets before booking. Vegetarian options are available on request.
• Severe allergies cannot be catered for. For safety, guests with life-threatening allergies cannot join.
• Wine is for 18 and over. Non-alcoholic drinks are offered instead.
• You walk the whole time. A moderate level of fitness is expected; strollers are fine.
• The guide may switch languages. Commentary can be in English and French on the same walk.
