What to See Along the Coast

Much of it costs nothing: the old towns, the markets, the seafronts and the park on Castle Hill are free. The paid doors are the palaces, villas and museums, from the Prince's Palace in Monaco at €13 to the Fondation Maeght at €18, and none of them sits inside a tour fare.

Getting Around the Coast

One railway runs the length of the coast. From Nice the train reaches Monaco in about 22 minutes for €6.10, Antibes in 11 to 13 minutes and Menton for €7.70. The hill villages sit above the line, which is where a road tour with hotel pickup saves you the buses.

When to Come

Summer is dry: July averages 13.6 mm of rain in Nice, while November is the wettest month. The palace opens from 30 March to 15 October and the sunset boat sails from April to October, while February brings the lemon festival in Menton. Book the day you want most early in your stay.

The coastal train runs from Nice to Monaco in about 22 minutes for €6.10, calling at Villefranche-sur-Mer, Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Èze-sur-Mer on the way. Antibes is 11 to 13 minutes the other way, and Cannes about 27 minutes on the fastest trains. Tram line 2 links the airport to the centre of Nice and the port, and a Ticket Azur costs €2.50.

Getting around the coast

The towns charge nothing to walk in; the paid doors are palaces and museums, such as the Prince's Palace at €13 and the Oceanographic Museum at €22.50, and no fare here includes them. Fares run from $58 for two hours at the wheel and $75-$111 for a half-day to $85-$149 a person for a full day. A whole boat runs up to $476 for a group, and some add €300 paid on board.

How much do French Riviera tours cost?

From $58 for a two-hour open-top e-car loop and $62 for the sunset boat. A half day to Èze and Monaco costs $75 to $111 a person, a full road day $85 to $149, and a private road tour $180 to $191 a person. Whole boats start at $158 for a group, and some add €300 on board.

Can cruise passengers join a road tour?

Some can. The Liven Up Nice full day picks up at the port, and the private road tours from Nice collect you where you ask, the port included. Riviera Star Tours' days and BINGO TOUR's half-day do not take cruise passengers, so check before you book.

Is entry to the Prince's Palace or the museums included?

No tour listed here includes a paid interior. The palace State Apartments cost €13 and open from 30 March to 15 October; the Oceanographic Museum costs €22.50. The Fragonard perfume factory in Èze is free, and most road days stop there.

How many French Riviera towns can you see in one day?

A full road day from Nice reaches four to seven towns, typically Èze, Monaco, Cannes, Antibes and Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Time in each runs from 15 minutes to 2.5 hours, so compare the stop times, not only the list of names.

Is a half day enough for Èze and Monaco?

For a first look, yes. The half days give 30 minutes to 1.5 hours in Èze village, usually with the free Fragonard factory, and 20 minutes to about 1 hour 40 in Monaco and Monte-Carlo. Pick the one with the longer stops if Monaco matters most.

Which boat tours include a swim?

The Mala cave boat, the sunset boat and the 3-hour trip with a stop in Villefranche-sur-Mer all stop to swim, and so do most private boats. Swimming is unsupervised; non-swimmers stay aboard.

What is the €300 fee on some private boats?

It is paid per booking on top of the online price: for the captain and service on the Cannes boat, for the captain and fuel on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat day-cruiser, and as local fees on the boat from below Èze. Every price here prints that fee beside it.

Are there French Riviera wine tours?

Yes: an e-bike ride from Nice to an organic vineyard in Bellet with a tasting, and a seated tasting of eight French wines in central Nice. Riders can be 15 on the vineyard ride, but only over-18s are served wine.

Are the tours suitable for wheelchair users?
