Where the boat goes, and for how long
You leave the port of Nice and head east along the coast for about 25 minutes, past the cape and the cliffs, to a small beach and cave set into the rock. This is the Mala: the cave below the cliffs between Cap d'Ail and Èze. The boat stops here for about 45 minutes, and you can swim, snorkel or stay on board and watch.
The way back is the sightseeing half. You spend about 20 minutes along the coast below Èze, then around 15 minutes each along the shore of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and through the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer. The guide talks you through the villas, the capes and what lives in the water, with music on board between the stories.
Why this is the swim trip, not the sightseeing trip
Many boats out of Nice are built around looking. This one is built around getting in. Forty-five minutes is long enough to swim out to the rocks, find fish with a mask and come back for a rest in the sun on deck. Some travellers still wish for longer in the water, so if the swim is the point, this is the boat to pick over a shorter cruise.
It is also the cheapest way to see the capes from the sea with a guide. If you would rather step ashore, the three-hour trip with a stop in Villefranche from the same quay adds time on land. Important. Swimming is unsupervised, and anyone who
cannot swim may not enter the water. If a member of your party is not a confident swimmer,
they can stay on board, or you can book the road day along the whole coast
instead.
The two hours, stage by stage
- Check in. Be at the quay 15 minutes before departure; late arrivals do not sail.
- Out along the coast. About 25 minutes east from the port, past the cape.
- The swim stop. About 45 minutes at the cave: swim, snorkel or stay on deck.
- Below the hill village. About 20 minutes along the shore under the cliffs.
- The cape and the bay. About 15 minutes each along Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and through Villefranche bay.
- Back to port. The trip ends where it began. The route and the swim spot can change with the sea.

- You want a proper swim and snorkel, not just a look at the coast.

- You have a morning or an afternoon free in Nice and no car.
- You are travelling with children aged five or over who can swim.

At the tram stop on the port of Nice
The meeting point is on the quay directly in front of the Port Lympia stop at the end of tram line 2, where the operator's agent checks you in. The line runs from the airport through the centre, so you can reach it without a taxi from most of the city.
Arrive 15 minutes before departure: late arrivals are not accepted. There is no hotel pickup. The same quay is the start for the sunset boat and the three-hour trip, and the meeting-point map shows where it sits against the old town and the station.
Know before you go
- There is no shade and no toilet on board. Use the port facilities before you leave, and bring a hat.
- Bring your own towel. Swimwear, sunscreen, sunglasses and a jacket are on the operator's list too.
- Leave large bags behind. Luggage, large bags and pets are not allowed on board.
- The boat's colour varies. It may be blue, black or yellow; look for the agent, not the hull.
- The sea decides the route. The swim spot can move, and a rough day is postponed or refunded.
- There is a weight limit. The boat does not take people over 100 kg.

Do I have to swim?
No. You can stay on board during the stop and enjoy the view. Anyone who cannot swim is not allowed in the water, as swimming is unsupervised.
Is snorkel gear included?
Yes. Masks, snorkels and life jackets are on board. Bring your own towel, as towels are not supplied.
Do we go ashore anywhere?
No. The boat stays at sea for the whole two hours, and the swim is from the boat. The three-hour trip from the same quay stops in the harbour town.
Can we bring children?
Children aged five and over can come, and they must be able to swim to enter the water. Children under five are not accepted on this boat.
What if we want a day on land instead?
