The French Riviera in Winter: Mimosa, Lemons and What Still Runs

From November to March the coast is quieter, milder than most of Europe, and still open. A few things stop: the sunset boat, the palace apartments in Monaco, a chapel in Villefranche-sur-Mer. Others begin: the mimosa, the lemon festival. This guide says what runs, which French Riviera boat tour still sails, and how to plan a winter week.

What does winter do to a Riviera trip?

It shortens the days and empties the beaches, and it leaves most of the rest. Nice averages 13°C in the afternoon in January and 14°C in February, with around 157 hours of sun in January. The nights are cool, about 6°C.

November is the wettest month, with about 138 mm of rain. From December on it dries out. Nice built its first fame on winter: since 2021 it has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List as a winter resort town of the Riviera.

What still runs, and what stops?

The road tours print no season, so check your date before you plan around one.

When does the mimosa flower?

From January to early March, at its best from mid-January to mid-February. The Tanneron massif holds Europe's largest mimosa forest. The Route du Mimosa runs about 130 km from Bormes-les-Mimosas to Grasse across it.

No tour here drives the mimosa route. The villages day reaches the perfume town at its end, and a car does the rest.

When is the lemon festival in Menton?

From 13 to 28 February 2027. The town builds floats and sculptures from citrus fruit. Menton is €7.70 by train from Nice, so a day there is easy.

The Menton food walk makes a good afternoon on the same trip. It starts at the carousel in the centre and includes lunch.

What is Monaco like out of season?

Calmer, and mostly open. The Changing of the Guard still happens at 11:55 every day. The Oceanographic Museum opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 in winter, closed only on Christmas Day.

What closes is the palace. Its State Apartments open from 30 March to 15 October, so a winter visit sees the square and the guard, not the rooms.

Which boats sail in winter?

The solar boat from Beaulieu-sur-Mer sails all year, and hands out blankets in the cold months. It is private, for up to six, and runs for two to four hours as you choose.

The sunset boat from Nice runs from 1 April to 30 October, and stops after that. For the other boats, check your date on the booking page: a winter sea is rougher, and swims are for the hardy.

Do road tours run in winter?

The road days print no season on their cards, so they may well run. Check your date when you book. A small-group half day, such as the one with an hour of viewpoints on the middle road, suits a short winter day: you are back before dark.

Which museums and gardens keep winter hours?

• Matisse museum, Nice: 10:00 to 17:00 from November to March, closed Tuesdays.
• Chagall museum, Nice: 10:00 to 17:00 from November to April, closed Tuesdays.
• Castle Hill park: free, 08:30 to 18:00 from November to March.
• Cocteau chapel, Villefranche: closed from mid-November to mid-December, and on Tuesdays.
• Villa Kérylos: closed on 25 December and 1 January.
• Villa Ephrussi: publishes its hours from February to November.

Which tours suit a short winter day?

Short ones. The half-days by road take four to five hours and bring you back before dark. The food walks take three hours and feed you lunch. The wine tasting in central Nice is two hours seated indoors, which makes it a good plan for a wet afternoon. The solar boat lets you choose two, three or four hours.

The long road days of nine or ten hours are harder in December, when the light goes early. Save them for March, or take the half day instead.

What is Cannes like in winter?

Quieter than in May, and still busy with residents. The Marché Forville opens from 7:00 to 13:00, Tuesday to Sunday, and turns into a flea market on Mondays. The abbey's ferry, Planaria, sails to Saint-Honorat all year, about 20 minutes from the old port, for €19.50 return. On the island you can walk among the monks' vines and buy the wine they make.

The fort on Sainte-Marguerite publishes its summer hours; check its winter ones before you cross. The Cannes food walk makes a good lunch between the market and the ferry.

What does Menton offer beyond the festival?

A food walk that shows you the town in three hours. It starts at the carousel, visits the covered market hall, the beach of Les Sablettes and the Place du Cap, and includes lunch. The old town climbs above the sea in ochre and pink. The train goes on from Menton into Italy, to Ventimiglia, about 48 minutes from Nice.

How would you plan a winter week?

Base yourself in Nice. Spend a day on foot in the old town and on Castle Hill, and a day on the train to Monaco for the guard. Take a half-day tour up to the village above the sea, where the Fragonard factory runs free visits all year.

In February, give a day to Menton for the lemons. In January or February, drive or ride out to the mimosa. On the calmest day, book the solar boat. Keep the museum days for rain, and remember that Tuesday closes the big two in Nice.

How wet and how sunny is a winter month?

The figures are Météo-France's 1991-2020 normals for Nice. November brings the most rain days; from January the sun returns, and March is noticeably brighter. Plan your boat and your village days for the dry spells, and keep a museum for the wet ones.

Which towns stay lively in winter?

Nice most of all, if you want life around you. It is a working city, and its markets run every morning but Monday all year. Menton comes alive in February for the lemons. Monaco keeps its guard, its museum and its casino. In Cannes, the Forville market opens Tuesday to Sunday, and the abbey's ferry to Saint-Honorat sails all year.

What closes at Christmas and New Year?

You lose a handful of doors. The Oceanographic Museum closes on 25 December. Villa Kérylos closes on 25 December and 1 January. The Matisse museum closes on both days too, and the Cocteau chapel on 25 December. The trains, the streets and the free sights stay open for you.

Are the hill villages worth it in winter?

Yes, and they are quieter, so you can take your time in the lanes. The Jardin exotique above the sea opens daily from 9:00 to 16:30 for €10. Fragonard's factory beside it gives free visits all year. Inland, the Fondation Maeght opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00. The villages day from Nice reaches the perfume town at the end of the mimosa route, the village of violets and the art village in eight hours.

What should you pack?

Layers. The afternoons can be warm enough for a café terrace, and the evenings need a coat. Nights average around 6°C in January, so pack for that rather than for the sunshine. Bring a light waterproof for November, shoes with grip for the steep village lanes, and a warm layer for any boat.

When do the big events fall?

Not in winter. The Cannes film festival runs from 11 to 22 May 2027, and the Monaco Grand Prix on the weekend of 3 to 6 June 2027. If you want the coast without either crowd, winter and early spring are the time.

Is winter cheaper?
